Abstract

532,301. Medicines. McGEORGE, W., and MILNER, F. H. Aug. 25, 1939, No. 24505. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group III] Sodium bicarbonate is precipitated from its aqueous solution, containing not less than 3 grams per 100 grams of water, by from ¢ to 3 times the volume of a water soluble organic acetone, isopropyl-alcohol or dioxant solvent such as alcohol, preferably at a raised temperature, not exceeding 45‹ C. Mixtures of sodium bicarbonate with the carbonates of calcium, magnesium and/or bismuth are prepared by suspending these carbonates in the bicarbonate solution prior to addition of the precipitant liquid. In examples (1) and (2) sodium bicarbonate is precipitated by alcohol under specified conditions ; (3) the precipitation is effected in the presence of a mixture of calcium carbonate, basic magnesium carbonate and bismuth carbonate. The mixtures have a rapid therapeutic action when taken medicinally for the treatment of stomach disorders. A mixture of sodium bicarbonate with one or more of the carbonates prepared as above may be blended with the remaining carbonate or carbonates. The mixed precipitate of carbonate obtained by the process of Specification 532,300, [Group III], may be suspended in the bicarbonate solution before addition of the precipitant liquid.
