Abstract
1,044,215. Improving sweetening agents. KAHATSUH SEITO CO Ltd. July 4, 1963 [July 13, 1962], No. 26572/63. Heading A2B. The taste of a sweetening agent comprising saccharin, sodium saccharin, sodium cyclamate or calcium cyclamate, or a mixture thereof, is improved by dissolving the agent in water, at a temperature not exeeding the boiling point of the solution, treating the solution with sodium chloride and one or more than one physiologically tolerated, i.e. non-toxic alkaline salt of a strong base and a weak acid, e.g. sodium bicarbonate and/or sodium glutamate, heating and/or boiling the resulting solution to bring about chemical reaction and the formation of a precipitate, then, if necessary, rapidly cooling the solution to room temperature or a temperature between 0 and -20‹ C., to promote precipitation, and finally separating the precipitate containing unwanted bitter substances from the solution, as by filtration. The separated solution may be concentrated until the improved sweetening agent crystallizes out. The amount of alkaline salt or salts used, is preferably less than the weight of sweetening agent in solution.
