Abstract
Sodium salts of carboxyalkyl celluloses are made by treating a semi-moist mixture containing cellulose with the sodium salt of a chloro-fatty acid and an excess of sodium hydroxide, sufficient sodium bicarbonate being included in the mixture to convert the excess sodium hydroxide into sodium carbonate. The sodium bicarbonate is added before the etherification reaction has proceeded to any substantial extent. In one example, disintegrated sulphite woodpulp sheet is mixed with ethyl alcohol and sodium hydroxide solution, mono-chloracetic acid and then sodium bicarbonate are added, and mixing is continued for 30 minutes at 20-25 DEG C.
