Abstract

1,223,206. Na and K silicate solutions. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. 15 Sept., 1969 [16 Sept., 1968], No. 45353/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] An alkali metal silicate solution having a molar ratio of SiO 2 to Na 2 O or K 2 O of from 5:1 to 10:1 for sealing phosphate coatings on metals (see Divisions C6-C7) is formed either by adding a water-soluble mono- and/or polyquaternary nitrogen compound to commercial alkali metal silicate solutions or by decreasing alkali metal ions by an ion exchanger or by adding an acid, e.g. H 2 SO 4 , HCI or HNO 3 . The quaternary nitrogen compounds may be in the form of hydroxides, chlorides, sulphates or nitrates. Several examples are described, e.g. 655 g. of sodium waterglass with an SiO 2 : Na 2 O molar ratio of 3: 90 is boiled with hexamethyl - hexamethylenediammonium hydroxide, 63 g. of silicic acid with a SiO 2 content of 87À5% is added and the mixture boiled until it becomes clear, cooled to 50‹ to 60‹ C. and then 200 g. of water is added.
