Abstract
1,149,274. Polyphosphate glasses. FMC CORP. 4 July, 1966, No. 29875/66. Headings C1A and C1M. A glassy polyphosphate composition that consists of from 46À5 to 48À5 mole per cent phosphorous pentoxide, from 35À5 to 44À5 mole per cent sodium oxide, from 1 to 4À25 mole per cent aluminium oxide and from 4 to 15 mole per cent calcium oxide is prepared by making up a precursor aqueous slurry by adding and dissolving calcium oxide values in an acidic phosphate, subsequently adding and dissolving sodium oxide values in the phosphate mixture, then adding and dissolving aluminium values to this phosphate mixture whereby a smooth, uniform, free-flowing, non- viscous mixture is produced, placing said precursor mixture in a furnace and heating this mixture to fusion temperatures to obtain a clear, molten mass and rapidly chilling the mass to obtain a glassy polyphosphate composition. This composition has a fusion temperature below about 1382‹ F., and a dissolving rate in water of between 25 and 125 milligrams per litre. The composition may be added in amounts of from 1 to 125 ppm to water to inhibit the corrosion of metals, the formation of metal scale on metal surfaces or the red colour due to the presence of iron in the water.
