Abstract
1,241,393. Silicate/phosphate mixture. FMC CORP. 31 March, 1969 [24 April, 1968], No. 16661/69. Heading C1A. Strong, free flowing, completely soluble, dryappearing, granular particles comprising a mixture of a hydratable alkali metal phosphate and an alkali metal silicate, wherein the SiO 2 : phosphate mole ratio is at least 1:1 and which particles yield a pH of at least 10.5 in a 1% aqueous solution, is prepared by heating an alkali metal phosphate in particulate form to a temperature of 60-100 C.; gradually adding an aqueous, alkali metal silicate solution; maintaining the resulting mixture at a temperature of 60-100 C.; continually evaporating water from the mixture; controlling the rate of addition of the silicate solution so that the mixture is maintained in a particulate, dryappearing, granular form; containing the addition until the SiO 2 : phosphate molar ratio is at least 1:1 and recovering dry-appearing, granular particles. The preferred conditions are 60- 75 C., an alkali metal silicate having a SiO 2 / M 2 O weight ratio below about 2.4:1 where M = Na, or K, an alkali metal phosphate size range of - 20 + 100 mesh (U.S. Standard) producing particles with a - 10 + 80 mesh size range. The disclosed phosphates are sodium tripolyphosphate, Na 5 P 3 O 10 ; tetrasodium pyrophosphate, Na 4 P 2 O 7 ; trisodium orthophosphate, Na 3 PO 4 ; sodium trimetaphosphate, (NaPO 3 ) 3 ; sodium tetrametaphosphate (NaPO 3 ) 4 ; potassium tetrametaphosphate (KPo 3 ) 4 and potassium pyrophosphate, K 4 P 2 O 7 .
