Abstract

A binder for foundry moulds from which silica is formed in situ is an alkali metal silicate solution in which the molecular ratio <FORM:0799608/III/1> , (M being the alkali metal), is between 4.7 and 5.2 and in which the silica content is between 200 and 270 grams per litre of solution. The solutions are prepared by reaction, at a moderate temperature and atmospheric pressure, of hydrated silica and a commercial solution of alkali metal silicate. In an example, a solution of sodium trisilicate 38-40 B<\>ae, silica gel containing 14 per cent water, and water, are mixed and heated to 95 DEG C. Instead of silica gel, precipitated silica or fossil silica of the kieselguhr type may be used. In a further example, potassium trisilicate and precipitated silica are used.
