Abstract
1499556 Partial hydrolysates of ethyl silicate; shell moulds; zinc paints ZIRCONAL PROCESSES Ltd 6 Nov 1975 46097/75 Headings C3T and C3N A gellable hydrolysate is obtained by acid hydrolysis of an ethyl silicate of SiO 2 content 36 to 43% by weight with water in a solvent which is a C 1-3 alkanol, ethylene glycol monomethyl or -ethyl ether, or acetone, using quantities such that the weight ratio of the ethyl silicate to total water is 6À9 : 1 to 8À2 : 1 and there are 9À85 to 11À64 m.eq. of acid per kg. of reaction mixture, the temperature being 18- 27‹ C., or the silicate/water ratio is 8À2-27À7 : 1, the acid concentration being 0À725-1À000 m.eq./kg., the solvent an ether alcohol and the temperature up to 60‹ C., the product solution in either case containing 12À5-21 wt. per cent of SiO 2 . In examples one solution is made by hydrolysing an ethyl silicate with water in 26À4 :1 weight ratio, in ethoxyethanol, with 0À75 m.eq./kg. of H 2 SO 4 ; others are obtained with a silicate/water ratio of 6À5-8À2 :1 in methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, methoxyethanol, or acetone with 11À6 m.eq./kg. of HCl. The product solutions may be mixed with refractory powders to give slurries for investment casting, or with zinc powder to give anticorrosion paints. In a specific Example 2¢ p.b.w. of zinc dust is added to 1 p.b.w. of a mixture of 300 p.b.w. of a hydrolysate solution, 100 p.b.w. of xylene, 20 p.b.w. of ammonium bentonite and 3 p.b.w. of ethoxyethanol.
