Abstract
1,188,182. Silica sol; silicates. PHILADELPHIA QUARTZ CO. 14 April, 1967 [10 May, 1966], No. 17166/67. Heading C1A. Stable hydrophilic silica sols are prepared by reacting elemental Si with water in the presence initially of at least 1À5% by weight NaOH whilst maintaining the SiO 2 concentration below 12%. As exemplified, Si and water are added incrementally to maintain the desired concentration. The resultant sol (which may contain sodium silicate) may be concentrated to 10-52% SiO 2 and if desired the resultant sol may be dried to form particulate SiO 2 or SiO 2 gel. Reaction temperatures from 20-200‹ C. are specified. Sodium, lithium or potassium silicates with high SiO 2 /alkali metal oxide ratios may be obtained by adding to the sol NaOH, KOH, LiOH or the corresponding silicates. The NaOH used for the reaction may be replaced by an equivalent amount of another alkali metal base, e.g. KOH, CsOH or alkali metal silicate. The sols, where desired after concentration, may have a particle diameter of 15-50 mm., a concentration of 10-52% SiO 2 at pH 9-10À2 and a SiO 2 /Na 2 O ratio (defined) of 180-500.
