Abstract
In the working up of titanium ores rich in iron such as ilmenite, the ore is admixed with sufficient carbon for the reduction of the iron oxide and any silica present, and with sufficient lime or calcium carbonate and caustic soda or sodium carbonate to convert the titanium oxide into titanates of the composition CaO.TiO2.Na2O.2TiO2 or CaO.TiO2.Na2O.3TiO2, whereby on smelting the mixture at temperatures of 1000--1400 DEG C., the titanate obtained is low in iron. If sufficient carbon is used to reduce also a part of the titanium oxide to Ti2O3 titanates having the ratio CaO : Na2O : Ti = 1 : 1.1 : 7.1 may be obtained. In the claims, reference is made to the use in the mixture of lime &c. and caustic soda &c. in the proportions 1 CaO to 4--6 NaOH. The low melting-point of the titanate enables it to be separated readily from the reduced iron.ALSO:In the reduction of the iron content of titanium ores such as ilmenite, the ore is admixed, prior to smelting at 1000-1400 DEG C., with sufficient carbon for the reduction of the iron oxide and any silica present, and with sufficient lime or calcium carbonate and caustic soda or sodium carbonate to convert the titanium oxide into titanates of the composition CaO.TiO2.Na2O.2TiO2 or CaO.TiO2.
