Abstract

Dense non-fused perichase is prepared by mixing a finely divided magnesium compound containing, on the fired basis, at least 9 per cent magnesia, with a chromium compound in such amount to provide up to 2 per cent chromium sesquioxide on the fired basis, and firing the mixture. Preferred magnesium compounds are the precipitated hydroxide and carbonate, or hydrated magnesia. Preferred chromium compounds are chromic acid and the chromates and dichromates of magnesium, ammonium, the alkali and alkaline earth metals, and chromium sulphate, chloride, nitrate and acetate. In examples, sea water is treated with calcined dolomite to give a magnesium hydroxide slurry to which chromic chloride or acid is added. Calcined oyster shells may also be used with sea water.ALSO:Dense non-fused periclase is prepared by mixing a finely divided magnesium compound containing, on the fired basis, at least 95 per cent. magnesia, with a chromium compound in such amount to provide up to 2 per cent. chromium sesquioxide on the fired basis, and firing the mixture. Preferred magnesium compounds are precipitated magnesium hydroxide and carbonate or hydrated magnesia. Preferred chromium compounds are chromic acid and chromates and dichromates of magnesium, ammonium, the alkali and alkaline earth metals, and chromium sulphate, chloride, nitrate and acetate. In examples, sea water is treated with calcined dolomite to give a magnesium hydroxide sludge to which varying amounts of chromic chloride or acid is added. Calcined oyster shells may also be used with sea water.
