Abstract

Periclase is prepared by mixing a material containing microcrystalline magnesia with chromium and/or its compounds in an amount to provide up to 39 per cent. chrome when fired, pressing the mixture and firing to at least 1300 DEG C. but without fusion. Temporary binders which break down to form magnesia e.g. magnesium chloride, sulphate or chromate may be added, and they form an intermediate oxy salt bond. With the higher amounts of chrome, spinels may be formed. Specifications 698,797 and 711,907 are referred to.
