Abstract

Densified magnesia (periclase) is made by heating magnesia on a magnesium compound with a small amount of a lithium compound and firing the mixture. Lithium halides are preferred but lithium carbonate, sulphate or nitrate may be used alone or in admixture with iron, chromium or aluminium in the form of lithium ferrite or chromate. In examples, 0.01 to 1 per cent by weight lithium fluoride is mixed with finely powdered magnesia, magnesium hydrate, carbonate, or chloride and the mixture heated at about 1300-1400 DEG C. Most of the lithium salt is volatilized. Alternatively, the lithium salt is deposited from a salt solution as a coating on the magnesia, which may be in the form of a slurry; the mixture is then dried, briquetted and fired. The product contains at least 95 per cent of magnesia and has a density of 3 to 3.5. The densified magnesia may be ground and used as "grog" in the manufacture of refractory bricks. U.S.A. Specifications 2,487,290, 2,641,529, 2,641,530 are referred to.
