Abstract

A non-fused crystalline refractory material consists essentially of agglomerated intergrown crystals of periclase and at least two magnesia spinels in amounts calculated as from 10 to 50 per cent. of periclase and from 50 to 90 per cent. of magnesia spinels, the proportion of lime being not over 2 per cent. and of total impurities 5 per cent., the surfaces of the periclase and spinel crystals at least partially abutting upon and bonding directly to the surfaces of contiguous crystals. The process for making the refractory material is similar to that given in Specification 811,986 by firing an admixture at a temperature of at least 1600 DEG C. but without fusion for at least one-half hour. Reference is made to the related matter of Specifications 811,985 and 811,986. Specifications 607,909 and 639,581 also are referred to.
