Abstract
Dead burnt dolomite or magnesia is prepared by admixing a minor amount of 0.5 to 4 mms. grains with a major amount of refractory material of grains larger than 4 mms., heating at 1650 DEG -1900 DEG C. whilst being stirred and separating off the smaller sized grains. The material forming the larger grains must not react with the smaller sized grains at the chosen temperature; magnesia and dolomite are specified.ALSO:Dead burnt dolomite or magnesia (see Group V) is used in the treatment of drinking, aggressive or industrial waters, and may be laid as a filtering bed or suspended in water. The filter mass need not be washed, and it is necessary to treat only some of the water, this then being admixed for correcting purposes with the remainder of the water, which has been bypassed.ALSO:A minor proportion of grains 0.5 to 4 mm. of dolomite or magnesia with a major proportion of refractory grains above 4 mms is heated at 1650 DEG -1900 DEG C., whilst being stirred, until the smaller range of grains are dead burnt, whence they are separated off. The material forming the larger grains is so chosen that is does not react with the smaller grains at the chosen temperature; magnesia and dolomite being specified. The mixture is passed through a slanting rotary furnace at a rate of 20-25 metres per hour.
