Abstract

A process for producing a basic refractory brick or shape, which may contain magnesia and one or more of the spinels, such as chrome-, alumina- and iron-spinel, comprises heating together (e.g. in a rotary or brick-making kiln) the normal constituents of a basic refractory, in normal gradings and proportions, to a temperature of 1300 DEG C. or more, for a time such as is used in normal refractory brick manufacture, then crushing and grading the fired product from which a brick or shape is moulded and re-fired in the normal way. E.g. for producing a "chrome-magnesite" brick, crushed and screened chrome ore, with particles from 0,5 m.m. to 4m.m., is blended with magnesia "flour," which is finer than 0,25 m.m., using 2 to 10% by weight water and 2% by weight sulphite lye bond. The proportions used may comprise between 20% and 80% by weight of chrome ore and between 80% and 20% by weight of "magnesite." The above mixture is pressed into bricks and fired at 1300 DEG C. or more. Following the firing, the bricks are crushed and graded to a particle size not greater than 4 m.m., with 30% by weight of the composition less than 0,25 m.m. in particle size. After pressing into bricks or shapes, the magnesia (MgO) and spinel (MgO. Cr2O3) composition is re-fired at 1500 DEG C. or more.
