Abstract
126,628. Desachy, P. Oct. 19, 1917, [Convention date]. Pigments.-A process for the manufacture of a pigment comprising the sulphate of a metal of the alkaline earths and zinc sulphide utilizes the process described in Specification 126,625, [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic], of producing zinc sulphide alone by causing a hot solution of sodium sulphide to react on an insoluble zinc product such as the oxide, carbonate, sulphite, &c. In preparing a mixture of barium sulphate and zinc sulphide, for instance, a mixed precipitate of barium sulphate and hydrated oxide, carbonate, or sulphite of zinc is first produced by treating a zinc sulphate solution with barium hydroxide, carbonate, or sulphite. The oxide or insoluble salt of zinc in the mixed precipitate is then converted into zinc sulphide by adding a hot solution of sodium sulphide or barium sulphide. The resulting mixture of barium sulphate and zinc sulphide is finally filtered, washed, calcined in a closed vessel with a small quantity of sulphur, and allowed to cool with the exclusion of air.
