Abstract

A starch suitable for use in electrophoresis is made by pre-treating raw starch, or starch paste obtained from a production process, with either a non-reactive organic solvent, demineralized water or an alkali or alkaline-earth-metal salt solution; heating the pre-treated starch to a temperature below 55 DEG C.; hydrolysing the product with an organic or inorganic acid, e.g. HCl, and/or a salt thereof, e.g. NaCl and KCl, at a temperature between 25-55 DEG C.; neutralizing, filtering, washing and drying the final product. The pre-treated starch may, before hydrolysis, be treated with an alkaline solution and/or fat-dissolving agents, and may also be heated to between 25-50 DEG C. for several hours after this treatment. Up to 10% by weight of glucose and/or dextrin may be added to the final dried product. The hydrolysis may be conducted at an excess pressure of up to 5 At.
