Abstract

In a process for the oxidation of neutral polysaccharides, the polysaccharide is oxidized with alkaline hypochlorite (pH 9-12) or with chlorine in water at a pH below 7 in the presence of a multivalent metal salt or salts at a temperature below 70 DEG C. or, for starch, below the gelatenization temperature, and the oxidized polysaccharide is recovered by neutralization, or by acidification, or by precipitation with alcohol, or by precipitation as an insoluble metal salt, followed by filtration and drying. The polysaccharide may be starch, cellulose or the polysaccharide contained in tamarind kernal. Specified multivalent salts are MgCl2, ZnCl2 NiSO4 and CuSO4. Either sodium or calcium hypochlorite may be used. The oxidation introduces carboxylic acid groups with a minimum of depolymerization. The oxidized products are easily dispersible in water to give pastes having little or no tendency to retrograde.
