Abstract

Ammonium phosphotungstate is prepared by adding ammonia to an organic solution of phosphotungstic acid, drying and washing the precipitate obtained, and heating at at least 360 DEG C. for at least 15 hours. The organic solvent may be acetone, ethyl or butyl alcohols or ethers, glycols, hexanone, isoamyl acetate, or dioxan. The ammonia may be dissolved in the same organic solvent, or may be bubbled through the solution of the acid. Drying may be at 100-200 DEG C., and washing may be effected with acid e.g. 2N.HNO3, then water and acetone. The product may be crushed to a mean diameter of 0.13 mm., and used as a cation exchanger for fixing Cs, e.g. in fission products, in acid medium.
