Abstract
1,212,278. Propylene oxide. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G., and ERDOLCHEMIE G.m.b.H. 24 Oct., 1968 [30 Nov., 1967], No. 50526/68. Heading C2C. A process for the continuous production of propylene oxide comprises reacting propylene with chlorine water, dividing the aqueous hydrochloric acid solution of propylene chlorohydrin thus formed into two component streams by fractional distillation, the sump product which runs off consisting of dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid free from any organic constituents, whilst a propylene chlorohydrin solution, which is subsequently hydrolysed by aqueous alkali liquors, is removed overhead as a distillate. Advantageously dichloropropane is added to the distillate enabling an organic phase enriched in chlorohydrin and an aqueous phase depleted in chlorohydrin to be formed. After the hydrolysis the propylene oxide formed is purified by fractional distillation.
