Abstract
Gamma-butyrolactone is produced by contacting maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride, or an ester of maleic, succinic or fumaric acid, in vapour phase, with hydrogen at 100 DEG C. to 400 DEG C. in the presence of a copper chromite catalyst at a pressure below five atmospheres. The catalyst may consist of copper oxide and chromium oxide in a ratio between 10:1 and 1:1, and may be reduced with hydrogen before use at a temperature below 350 degrees. When maleic or succinic anhydride is used it may be vapourized from a solution in an organic solvent. Succinic ester or anhydride is separated from the gamma-butyrolactone and recycled. In examples gamma-butyrolactone is obtained from maleic anhydride, diethyl maleate, succinic anhydride, diethyl fumarate and dipropyl succinate.
