Abstract
Anhydrous formaldehyde monomer is produced by a process wherein formaldehyde concentrate is heated in a distillation vessel with an inert liquid medium under distillation conditions at a temperature of at least 80 DEG C. whereby the liquid medium is evaporated and the formaldehyde concentrate is decomposed to form gaseous formaldehyde monomer, the evolved gases are cooled to condense inert liquid and water therefrom and gaseous formaldehyde is removed from the zone of condensation, "formaldehyde concentrate" being defined as "a material comprising formaldehyde for the most part, generally in the form of a low polymer, together with an appreciable amount of water", the term "inert liquid medium" signifying compounds which are inert to formaldehyde such as hydrocarbons, esters and ethers. The condensate is preferably run off to a separating vessel, the aqueous layer being discarded and the inert liquid layer being returned to the distillation vessel. An inert gas may be passed through the zone of condensation of the inert liquid. Examples are given in which the inert liquid is a petrol fraction, n-butyl acetate or decahydronaphthalene.
