Abstract

In a process for the preparation of vinyl acetate by the reaction of acetylene with acetic acid, the vinyl acetate is recovered from the reaction product by cooling to separate acetylene saturated with vinyl acetate, acetaldehyde, and acetic acid vapours, from the mixture of vinyl acetate and acetic acid, contacting the saturated acetylene with liquid acetic acid to remove vinyl acetate and acetic acid, heating the mixture of vinyl acetate and acetic acid to remove remaining acetylene and separating the vinyl acetate from the acetic acid. The reaction product may be cooled in a heat exchanger preheating the acetylene, preferably to between 20 and 30 DEG C., and the acetic acid wash is preferably in countercurrent flow in an absorption column such as a sieve plate column with intercoolers. Acetylene is removed from the vinyl acetate and acetic acid in a distillation column, and the base product mixture of vinyl acetate and acetic acid is fractionally distilled to separate the vinyl acetate.
