Abstract
Decaborane is prepared by heating diborane in the absence of O2 at at least 180 DEG C. in one part of a closed system, condensing the product in another part of the closed system at below 100 DEG C., and separating B10H14 from the condensate. The heating may be at 200-240 DEG C. and cooling may be at down to -40 DEG C., preferably 15-35 DEG C. Atmospheric, super-, or sub-atmospheric pressures may be used preferably superatmospheric up to 5 atmos. The heating may be effected in the presence of an ether, e.g. diethyl ether. In the examples, B2H6, with or without diethyl ether, is contained in a sealed, evacuated, tube which is placed in a furnace, so that half projected for cooling purposes. After heating, H2 was gassed-off, volatiles fractionated to yield B2H6 and B5H9, and the solid residue treated to yield (BH)x residue and B10H14 sublimate.
