Abstract

<PICT:0619856/III/1> Coal tar phenols are dehydrated and freed from sulphuretted impurities by subjecting them to a continuous dehydration in a plate column working under a vacuum, e.g. at an absolute pressure of about half an atmosphere, and connected to a boiler having a temperature of 120 DEG to 130 DEG C. Hydrogen peroxide or a mixture of oxygen and ammonia or a mixture of air and ammonia may be mixed with the raw phenols to decompose sulphuretted impurities in the column. Coat tar phenols are pumped from tank 1 through a temperature exchanger 3 and conduit 5 to the top of plate column 4 which is heated by the boiler 6 and evacuated by pump 14. The dehydrated phenols are withdrawn from the boiler and then flow through the temperature exchange 3, wherein they give up their heat to fresh raw phenols, into a tank 9 from which they may be pumped into a rectifying apparatus, as described for example in Specification 619,857. The vapours leaving the column 4 are condensed in the cooling apparatus 12. The condensate is withdrawn through barometric leg 15.ALSO:Coal tar phenols are dehydrated and freed from sulphuretted impurities by subjecting them to a continuous dehydration in a plate column working under a vacuum, e.g. at an absolute pressure of about half an atmosphere, and connected to a boiler having a temperature of 120 DEG to 130 DEG C. Hydrogen peroxide, or a mixture of oxygen and ammonia or air and ammonia may be mixed with the phenols to decompose sulphuretted impurities in the dehydration column. Specification 619,857, [Group III], is referred to.
