Abstract
<PICT:0597501/III/1> Apparatus for bringing gases into contact with solids (e.g., catalytic material) comprises two or more chambers 10 separated by grids or gratings (made for example of nickel-chromium alloy), and provided with valved ducts 16, 17 for introduction and removal of the solid. Flow of gas is indicated by the arrows. The chambers may be square in cross-section with one corner vertically above the diagonally opposite corner. Gas-tight hoppers and receivers may be associated with the ducts 16, 17, and means may be provided for introducing another gas at an intermediate stage. The chambers may be maintained at different temperatures and provision made for disturbing the solid material. The apparatus may be used in the removal of organic sulphur compounds from coal gas by passage through a nickel subsulphide catalyst, and also for the preparation of the catalyst for this process by reducing china clay pellets containing deposited nickel sulphate.
