Abstract
An installation for the prodn. of methane or synthesis gas from carbonaceous materials, including a circuit of helium heated in a nuclear plant, incorporates a methane cracking furnace heated by the product gas leaving one of two gasification units. In one unit, part of the carbonaceous material is converted to methane by gasification with hydrogen, while in the other unit conversion is to synthesis gas by gasification with steam. In one embodiment, partic. for the prodn. of synthesis gas, two methane cracking furnaces are heated by the product gases leaving the two gasification units respectively.
