Abstract

PURPOSE:To convert a solid carbonaceous material to a gas consisting mainly of methane at a faster gasification speed than that of a case where Ni alone is used as a catalyst, by a method wherein when the gasification reaction of the solid carbonaceous material in hydrogen stream is carried out in the presence of a Ni catalyst, a Ca salt capable of conversion into CaO by thermal decomposition is added as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:When a carbonaceous material (which is a solid at ordinary temperatures) such as coal, coke, etc. is heated at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst and in hydrogen stream to convert it into a gas consisting mainly of methane, Ni and CaO or a Ca salt capable of conversion into CaO by heating are added as catalysts. By the addition of CaO, gasification speed is remarkably increased.
