Abstract

1467995 Methane-rich gas BITUMINOUS COAL RESEARCH Inc 8 Oct 1974 [26 Oct 1973] 43550/74 Heading C5E Methane-rich pipe-line gas is made from a synthesis gas comprising hydrogen, methane, oxides of carbon and hydrogen sulphide and produced by the gasification of a carbonaceous feed by cooling, if the gas has a hydrogen : carbon monoxide molar ratio less than 1 : 1 introducing steam at a steam synthesis gas mol ratio of about 0À5 : 1, subjecting to a combined water gas shift a methanation reaction at 550-1050‹ F. (and preferably 500-2000 p.s.i.g.) to increase the hydrogen/carbon monoxide ratio of the gas and accomplish methanation of carbon monoxide and removing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from the product gas. As shown a hot char recycle stream 20 is contacted with steam and oxygen in a gasifier vessel 12 to produce a molten slag 22 and a gas which entrains and reacts with the pulverulent coal feed. The stream 16, e.g. at above 1600‹ F. and above 50 atmospheres, is separated into the char recycle stream 20 and a gaseous stream 24 which is cooled at 26 and subjected to the combined shift and methanation reaction at 30 after the addition of steam. The methane-rich gas 32 is cooled and in part recycled to the reactor 30 and in part further cooled at 38 and 40 and scrubbed at 44 to remove H 2 S and then at 48 to remove CO 2 . The scrubbed gas 52 can be reheated at 38 and 54 and subjected to catalytic methanation at 58, using a nickel catalyst preceded by a guard chamber of pelleted zinc oxide, to produce a pipe-line gas containing over 95% by volume of methane. The combined shift and methanation can be carried out in a fluidized bed having internal cooling coils or alternatively in a fixed bed or with catalyst suspended in liquid; a suitable catalyst comprises an oxide or sulphide of molybdenum with nickel or cobalt supported on alumina and promoted with potassium carbonate. The synthesis gas which is subjected to the combined shift and methanation reaction can be produced by the gasification of oil shale, heavy oil residues or tar instead of from coal.
