Abstract
939,602. Charging shaft furnaces. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. June 21, 1960 [June 23, 1959], No. 21685/60. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XXXV] In a shaft furnace for indurating balled iron ore fines, the speed of traverse of a conveyer for feeding the balled fines is controlled in dependence on the relative permeability to furnace gas of the burden, measured at the spot to which the feed is being delivered. As shown, Fig. 1, a shaft furnace 1 has a hood 16, stack 17 and a conveyer belt 12 which delivers balled fines to a burden B. Air is introduced at the bottom of the burden and combustion gases pass through to the top of the burden and escape through the stack. The conveyer belt 12 is mounted on a movable carriage 13 which is caused to traverse the top of the burden by a variable-speed motor 15. A thermocouple 19 and an anemometer 18, measuring temperature and velocity of the furnace gases, are positioned on the carriage 13 so as to be adjacent to the spot on which the conveyer discharges the fines. By an automatic electric control system (see Group XXXV) the permeability of the bed, which is stated to be proportional to the velocity of furnace gases at standard temperature is computed by electrically multiplying the anemometer reading by the ratio of standard temperature, in degrees absolute, to the measured gas temperature; a signal dependent on the computed permeability is then employed to control the motor 15 so as to vary the rate of traverse of the conveyer and maintain the permeability of the burden constant.
