Abstract

1,170,542. Producing iron and steel. D.O. MORRIS. Jan.3, 1967 [Jan.10, 1966], No.239/67. Heading C7D. In a cyclic process for the production of iron and steel, liquid iron from a carbonizer unit is, together with iron-bearing material and heat-producing substances, fed to a crude steel furnace which is blown with oxygen; the product of this operation, at a temperature of 1500‹-1700‹C., is then returned to the carbonizer where it dissolves more carbon. That part of the carbonized iron not required for cycling to the crude steel furnace is withdrawn and may be used for final steel making or for pig iron or for making castings. The iron-bearing materials may be ore, pre-reduced ore, or scrap, while the heat-producing substances may be, carbon, silicon, or aluminium, one or more carbides of iron, manganese, titanium, zirconium, aluminium, silicon or calcium, or one or more of the ferro-alloys containing silicon, aluminium, zirconium, manganese or titanium. The carbonizer unit may take the form of a "teapot" ladle of known form, which is filled with carbonaceous material.
