Abstract

A preshaped body for coking is as described in Specification 1,068,989, but the finely divided non-coking material comprises iron ore, which term includes hematite, limonite, magnetite and siderite. A finely divided fluxing material, e.g. limestone, rock dust, dolomite, fluorspar, hydrated lime or soda ash may be incorporated, preferably in a ratio in the range 6: 1 to 3: 1 (ore to flux). The coking method and the coking apparatus are as described in the other Specification.ALSO:An ore briquette comprises 35 to 75% by weight of coking coal, 65 to 25% by weight of finely divided iron ore or a mixture thereof with a slag-forming material, and 3 to 40 parts by weight per 100 parts solids of a liquid hydrocarbon which is capable of continuous gasification during coking. The ore fines may be produced by the Taconite process, or hematite, limonite, siderite or magnetite may be used. Particle sizes should be less than 50 S.M. (Tyler), preferably 70% minus 200 mesh. Fluxes mentioned are limestone, rock dust, dolomite, fluorspar, hydrated lime, and soda ash, and ratios (ore to flux) are 8 : 1 to 1 : 1. The liquid hydrocarbon should be one a major portion of which gasifies over the range 260 DEG to 600 DEG C., examples being Bunker C oil, No. 6 fuel oil, residual fuel oils, asphalt, and tar oils. After admixing, the body is shaped by a conventional briquetting or pelletizing process and the bodies are coked on a travelling grate, see Fig. 1 (not shown).
