Abstract

792,649. Heat-hardening briquettes. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Feb. 15, 1956 [Feb. 24, 1955; June 29, 1955; July 27, 1955], No: 4735/56. Class 55 (1): In a method of heat-hardening briquettes of fluid coke obtained by coking heavy hydrocarbons and an agglutinating carbonaceous binder at temperatures at which the briquettes tend to deform or oxidize, the briquettes are contacted with a gaseous suspension of fluid coke and separated therefrom when they have been heat-hardened. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the briquettes are fed through line 1 into a chamber 2 and fall countercurrently through an upwardly moving dense fluidized bed of fluid coke maintained by circulation through a heater 8 at a temperature above 700‹ F., preferably between 1200‹ and 1800‹ F., the time of the treatment being between 15 minutes and 2 hours. Fuidizing gas is admitted in quantities sufficient to fluidize the fluid coke but not the briquettes. In an example, the temperature of the fluidized bed is 1200‹ F. and the treatment time 30 minutes. In a modification the treatment chamber consists of a multi-stage elongated vessel in which a series of fluidized beds of fluid coke are maintained at different temperatures so that the briquettes pass downwardly through the beds of fluid coke at successively higher temperatures. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the briquettes from a conveyer 201 are fed together with fluid coke at 800‹ F. from a hopper 203 on to a moving grate 202. After 10 minutes the briquettes are fed into a hopper 207 and thence into an elongated healing zone 206 supplied with hot flue gases through line 209. The fluid coke is separated from the briquettes, reheated and passed back to the hopper 203 by line 211, while the briquettes pass downwardly through the zone and are heated to 1600‹ F. Cooling gas may be injected through line 216 and the heat-hardened briquettes are withdrawn through line 210. The treatment temperature and the treatment time on the moving grate may be between 600-1200‹ F. and 5-20 minutes respectively and in the elongated healing zone between 1200-2000‹ F. and 1-12 hours respectively.
