In a process for heat treating solid carbonaceous fuel, e.g. coal, in a carbonizer, a part at least of the volatiles driven off during the heating, with any water vapour, gas, and fine solids, is brought into contact at a high temperature with a flow of cooler solid material (fresh coal) so that volatiles condense on the material, which is then fed to the carbonizer. The carbonizer may be of fluidized bed or dilute phase type, and the volatiles may be passed through two cyclone separators in series to remove coarse material before contacting the fresh coal in a column. A portion of the fresh coal may by-pass the contacting column under the control of a valve responsive to the temperature of the gases leaving the column, and drive means for a conveyer delivering coal to the carbonizer and to the by-pass may be controlled by means responsive to the temperature in the carbonizer or in a cyclone separator following it. The process may be for making char for briquetting to make a smokeless fuel.
