Abstract
1,170,445. Making char from coal. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 7 March, 1967 [11 March, 1966], No. 10843/66. Heading C5E. In a method of heat-treating carbonaceous particulate material in a fluidized bed in which an oxygen-containing gas is used to fluidize the bed, at least two separators, preferably cyclones, are arranged in series with the gas offtake from the bed, and fines from the first separator only are returned to the bed, preferably to the dense phase of the bed. Fines from the second separator may be delivered to the outlet for the treated material. The process is applicable to heattreating coal to make char for briquetting, e.g. at 380‹ to 480‹ C., and the invention reduces the O 2 content of the gases above the bed and lowers the temperature above the bed.
