994,172. Drying apparatus. M. S. WOOSNAM. May 31, 1961 [May 31, 1960; Oct. 28, 1960], Nos. 19243/60 and 37223/60. Heading F4G. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] In an embodiment especially for drying, of apparatus for contacting fluids and particulate solids, the solid is fed by a conveyer 63 to a pre-drier 62 where it descends on trays 64 while being heated or dried by exhaust air from the chain apparatus. It then falls into a hopper 65 supplying a screw conveyer by which it is delivered to the upper surface of a rotating disc 12. Hot air delivered below the disc from the pipe 59 carries the powder up the annular space 25 at the top of which it separates out by cyclone action and falls through outlets 37, while the air passes down between the cylinders 16, 17 and up the track 17 to the predrier. The separated powder falls to an annular bed 55 where it is maintained in a fluidized state by air entering at 57; the final powder product is removed from the bed 55 by a downtake 58 while the fluidizing air passes through pipe 59 to the main apparatus. Heating coils 57, 60, 61 are provided. The fluidization chamber 25 may be subjected to an electric field or ionizing radiation.
