Abstract

1,017,897. Drying-apparatus. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Sept. 4, 1964 [Sept. 26, 1963], No. 36458/64. Heading F4G. Apparatus for drying comminuted material, e.g. coal, comprises a vertical shaft 10, Fig. 1, having a lower inlet end connected to a source of hot gases such as furnace 12 which flow upwardly through the duct under the influence of a fan 36 with sufficiently high velocity to carry therewith the material which is introduced by a rotating table feeder 20 into the duct evenly about the entire periphery, and the dried material is separated from the gases either in an outer cyclone chamber 24 or an inner cyclone 28. The feeder comprises a housing 42, Fig. 2, about a rotary annular table 44, divided by partitions 46 into segmental pockets with inclined bottoms 48 into which the material is fed from a feeder 18, which pockets continuously discharge into the column 10 through a helical inlet opening 56 therein. The coarser dried material is deposited, by expansion of the gases on leaving the duct, in the chamber 24 for collection into a table feeder 26 and discharge therefrom, and the fines are separated out in the cyclone 28 by tangential admission thereinto through apertures 30.
