Abstract

566,662. Drying grass &c. KATZ, A. March 29, 1943, No. 5010. [Class 34 (ii)] Apparatus for drying fibrous material, such as grass, comprises a drying chamber 2 through which the material is passed from a feeding hopper 1 to an outlet 9 in a zig-zag manner on a conveyer or conveyers 5 in opposition to hot gases which are blown through the chamber from the outlet end 9 and through a perforated plate 3 separating the hopper 1 from said chamber 2. The conveyers 5, which are made of wire netting or of porous textile fabric &c. so that the drying gases flow through the chamber without substantial change of direction, are mounted on upper driving sprockets 10 and lower trailing wheels 11, fast rotating teasing wheels 13 being located as shown at points where the material falls from an upper run of the conveyers to a lower one. A heater, e.g. a gas, coal or coke oven 20, or electric heater, having an air inlet 22 may be located within the drying chamber near the feeding hopper, and the gases of combustion, mixed with air supplied to the combustion space 21 of the heater from an inlet 17 and through a duct 18, fan 16 and second duct 19, are withdrawn through a duct 23 extending within the drying chamber by exhausters 24 and then blown by the latter through said chamber. Each conveyer 5 may be replaced by several short upwardly-inclined conveyers.
