Abstract

653,384. Drying apparatus. AIR CONTROL INSTALLATIONS, Ltd. (Aktiebolaget Svenska Flaktfabriken). March 31, 1947, No. 8709. [Class 34(ii)] A drying drum for drying material, e.g. chopped grass, is rotatable on its horizontal axis and is separated along its length into two zones separately supplied with drying medium which flows in the same direction as the material in both zones. As shown, the material to be dried, carried on a conveyer 4, and gas from the furnace 1, enter the drying zone A, in section 5 of the drum, at 2, the material being picked up by scoops 6 having bent over tips, the angles between the tips and the main parts of the scoops varying along the length of the section. The material enters the drying zone B in the section 14, which slidably engages the section 5, and is provided with scoops 17 and a gas inlet 18 for drying medium at a lower temperature, by pipes of a sluice 8 while drying medium, and light particles carried by it, issue from section 5 by a central aperture in the plate 10 to enter, the channel 15 between the sections and the compartment 23 of a stationary box 21. The compartment 22 of the box 21 is in communication with the interior of zone B and particle-laden gas from both compartments is sucked by a fan 27 into a cyclone 30 which separates the material, which is returned to section 14 by the pipe 31 and conveyer 32, from the gas, which is discharged through the outlet 33. The dried material from section 14 drops into compartment 22 from which it flows to a vertical pipeline connected to a cyclone separator 35 from which the dried material drops into the receiver 38 from which it may be filled into sacks. The two supplies of drying medium may be derived from the same furnace and in a modification the two drying zones are not separated by a sluice device, the hot gases flowing from the first to the second zones mixing with a fresh supply of hot gas from the furnace at the junction of the two zones.
