[Classes 51 (ii and 55 (i).] In the preliminary heating or drying of coal, shale, cement slurry, limestone, or solid materials which undergo a subsequent heat treatment, the heat from a hot residue such as coke is transferred to the raw material such as coal, either by direct contact, or by heating a gas by passage through the hot coke and using the heated gas to preheat the coal. Hot coke is discharged from a coke oven through hoppers 1 and 2 into a container 3, through which a current of cold gas is forced by a fan 12 and pipe 13. The gas, thus heated, passes through a pipe 15, fan 16, and pipe 17 to the bottom of a shaft 7 down which the coal to be heated, or dried is showered from a hopper 6. The cooled gas passes through an outlet 18 to a dust separator 19, and may escape through a pipe 20, or be returned by a conduit 1 leading to the fan 12. The dust is returned to the shaft 7 through a conduit 21. The temperature of the coal may be adjusted by byepassing some of the cold gas through a pipe 22 into the hot gas conduit 15. In Fig. 2, the hot residue such as coke is fed from a chamber 3 to a shoot 4<1> in which it is joined by coal from a container 6. The hot and cold materials are mixed in a rotary drum 9<1> which at one end has perforations 11<1> through which the heated coal passes into a hopper 12<1>. The cooled coke passes through the end of the drum into a hopper 13<1>, and may be further cooled by gas from an inlet 14<1>.
