Abstract
688,573. Drying apparatus. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING-SUPERHEATER, Inc. Nov. 8, 1950 [Nov. 17, 1949], No. 27284/50. Class 34 (ii) Pneumatic drying apparatus has a vertica drying column B, a furnace A, a cyclone separator C a hot gas delivery chamber G with a pick-up section 16 of adjustable length and a conduit 7 leading from the furnace A to a lateral opening in the chamber G which chamber has an inwardly tapered lower portion, the cross-section of conduit 7 and chamber G being large relative to that of the column and pick-up section. Wet coal is fed from a bin D by a feeder E to the section 16 whence it is carried up the column by the hot gases drawn through the apparatus by a fan 9, the gases passing through the pick-up section having a velocity of 10,000 feet per minute which falls to the neighbourhood of 5,500 feet per minute in the column B. Heavy particles not carried through the system are discharged through valve 20 and dried coal is delivered from the cyclone C through an air lock 11 to a conveyor 12. The adjustable length pickup section 16 allows the velocity of the gases to be established before the entry of the wet coal and may be adjusted for different types of coal.
