Abstract

647,958. Drying apparatus. SPENCE & SONS. Ltd., P., and RYCKE, D. DE. Aug. 13, 1947, No. 22465. [Class 34(ii)] A drying column 1 has a plurality of chambers, 2, 3, 4 each comprising an inverted slowly divergent truncated cone 5 surmounted by a rapidly convergent truncated cone 6, the chambers being superimposed so that the exit of one opens directly to the inlet of its neighbour, the outlet from the uppermost chamber 4 opening directly to a duct 7 leading to a cyclone separator 8. Wet material is delivered by a conveyer 9 to a hopper 10 fitted with an agitator 11 which discharges the material through a worm feeder 13 to a throat-piece 18 at the inlet to chamber 2. Air or gas supplied by a fan 19 through a heater 20 is discharged into throat 18 via elbow-piece 21 and issues at high velocity into chamber 2 carrying the material upwards. Smaller masses are carried to the top of the chamber where some rebound from the cone 6 towards the centre of the rising stream and cause disintegration, small dried particles passing on into the next chamber. Modifications include having flat annular covers instead of the cone 6 and spacing the adjacent chambers and connecting them by lengths of ducting.
