392,535. Rotary kilns. PAYNTER, W. L., Myrtle Cottage, Kells Lane, Low Fell, Gateshead-on-Tyne, and FORTH ENGINE & MOTOR WORKS (NEWCASTLEUPON-TYNE), Ltd., Pottery Lane, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Nov. 16, 1931, No. 31609. [Class 51 (ii).] Apparatus for drying granular materials comprises an inclined rotary chamber having means for producing a blast directed towards its upper end whereby hot gases from a furnace are drawn into the lower end of the chamber and passed upwards therethrough, the material to be dried being fed into the upper end of the chamber and discharged from the lower end thereof after being cascaded therethrough. In the form shown the rotary chamber 10 projects through a smoke-box 16, and the lower end is attached to a cage 17 projecting through the combustion chamber 18 of a furnace 19 fed from a hopper 24 and supplied with forced draught by a blower, Compressed air from the pipe 36 passes through the nozzles in the plate 35, and thereby draws furnace gases into the drying chamber via the baffled slots formed by the Z-shaped bars 31 of the cage 17. The slits 40 forming the exit for the mixed gases are also baffled to prevent the escape of the material under treatment. The stones or other material fed by the bucket conveyer 41 open the flap 46 and pass to the drying chamber 10 in which they are cascaded by angle-bars 38 and retarded by baffles 39. The stones pass to the exit through spiders 32, 33, 54, being discharged on sliding the boss 56 carrying plate 55; 50, 51 are dust exits.
