Abstract
592,662. Drying grass &c. COOPER, G. W: June 16, 1944, No. 11502. [Class 34 (ii)] Grass &c. is dried by subjecting it to the combined actions of heated air and successive squeezing operations in its passage on perforated endless conveyers 12, 13 and 26, 27, 28 through a casing 10 from an inlet hopper 11 to a discharge opening 33. The conveyers 12, 13, which travel in opposite directions as shown, are mounted between pulleys 14, and the pulleys at the discharge ends thereof have associated upper gravity or spring-pressed squeezing rollers 17 and lower liquid-collecting troughs 21, the pulleys 14 and rollers 17 all being positively rotated. Similar rollers 17 and coacting rollers 18 may also be provided along the length of the conveyer 13. The finishing conveyers 26, 27, 28 also move alternately in opposite directions as shown, the grass being fed to the upper one by a rotary drum 22, having peripheral projections 23, and delivered by the lower one, past a downwardly-depending door 34 covering the discharge opening 33, into a vertical duct 36 up which an air blast is maintained by a fan 37 and which leads to a tangential separator 38 having outlets 39, 40 for the air and grass respectively. The heated air, e.g., from an externally located furnace, is circulated through the casing 10 by a fan 43 in an inlet duct 42 above which is preferably located a dispersing baffle 45; alternatively the air in the duct 36 is heated and the discharge from the outlet 39 led to the said duct 42.
