Abstract

1,058,084. Pneumatic separators. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Nov. 12, 1963 [Oct. 16, 1962], No. 39089/62. Heading B2H. [Also in Division F4]. Particulate solid material to be separated, such as coal, is passed to a thermal drier 10 and then to a dry separator 14, the finer and lighter particles being removed from both the drier and separator by gas entrainment. As shown, the coal is fed by a screw conveyor 11 on to a fluidized bed of the drier which is provided with a furnace 18 supplied with fuel through a pipe 19; the particles become fluidized and dried by means of hot gases which pass through a perforated bed plate 12. The fluidizing medium may by the products of combustion or air. The particles then pass down an outlet 13 to one or more separators 14 each provided with one or more perforated vibratory tables 15; if desired the particles may be screened before entering the separators. In the separator shown, separation is made by means of the vibratory motion of the bed plate and an upward current of air which causes the particles to be fluidized. A fan 16 is used to introduce air into both the drier and separator, the finer and lighter particles being led from the drier and separator to a cyclone 17. Fine coal is withdrawn from the bottom of the cyclone and the clean fraction through an outlet 24. If desired, separate fans and cyclones may be employed and, instead of air, an inert gas may be employed in a closed circuit. Control dampers 22, 23 and 13a regulate the air flow. In alternative forms of the invention, the dry separator may be spiral, utilize jump plates or employ beds of marbles, sand or magnetite.
