Abstract

833,135. Carbonizing coal. CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE. Feb. 18, 1958 [Feb. 22, 1957], No. 5305/58. Class 55 (1). In a fluidized process for carbonizing finelydivided coal, the coal is first dried in zone 3 and then carbonized in zone 1, preheated air being introduced via line 7 into the carbonization zone to fluidize the coal therein and to generate by partial combustion the heat required for the carbonization; product gases and coke or semi-coke are withdrawn by lines 8 and 21 respectively, air being introduced via line 11 into the product gases for partial combustion thereof in a combustion zone 2; the resulting hot gases are passed through zone 3 to fluidize and dry the coal fed from a hopper 15 and finally withdrawn via line 17. The coke or semi-coke withdrawn through line 21 passes to a cooling zone 4 in which it is fluidized by a stream of inert cooling gas circulating through the zone 4 and a cooler 23. Cooled coke or semi-coke is withdrawn by line 25 and a cooling liquid may be injected into the fluidized coke or semi-coke in the cooling zone through a line 24. The drying zone is maintained at between 570‹ and 750‹ F. and the carbonization zone at between 930‹ and 1,650‹ F. In a modified form of apparatus for carrying out the process the drying zone, the combustion zone for partially combusting the product gases and the carbonization zone are arranged in a single vessel.
