Carbon.-A compressed carbon for absorption and catalysis consists of a ligneous substance such as wood, peat, or lignite carbonized below 500‹ C., a binder comprising oxidized substances obtained from the heat treatment of tar from wood, peat, or lignite, which are decomposable below 500‹ C. into water and a non-distillable carbon residue, and, optionally, a small quantity of inorganic oxides or salts, e.g. of copper, nickel, zinc, or iron. The mixture is pulverized and compressed either hot or cold and then heated to between 300‹ C. and 500‹ C, until water vapour ceases to be evolved.
