Materials for making coke. - A composition fuel for use in gas producers is obtained by carbonizing a mixture of charcoal and mineral carbon (i.e. substances of vegetable origin wholly or partly transformed into coal) together with a mucilaginous binding material such as peat or seaweed and, if desired, a catalyzer. A cellulosic paste is obtained from peat by mixing the latter with water in a device adapted to increase the natural colloidal state of the peat, and to this paste is added seaweed or a cellulosic lye. The pulverized fuels are then added to the paste. Tar, preferably obtained from the carbonization of the composition fuel as indicated below, may also be added. A metallic powder or mineral substance such as pulverized iron ore is added to the paste to assist the reactions during the use of the fuel. The composite paste is then made into briquettes which are carbonized, preferably with the recovery of the tar. The briquettes are quenched without being completely cooled and are then immersed in a solution of a nitrate, preferably calcium nitrate, together with treacle. The briquettes may finally be placed in an atmosphere of hydrogen or of a hydrocarbon such as methane, the hydrogen, &c., sometimes being under pressure.
