Abstract
1,050,217. Making combustible gas. RUHRGAS A.G. July 30. 1965 [Aug. 1, 19641, No. 32765/65. Heading C5E. A gas interchangeable with natural gas is made by mixing a hydrogen-rich gas produced by the carbonization, gasification or cracking of solid, liquid or gaseous fuels, e.g. coke oven gas, with a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon and subjecting the mixture to a catalytic methane - forming reaction. The methane-forming reaction consists in the autohydrogenation of carbon oxides in the H 2 -rieh gas and the hydrocracking of the added hydrocarbon, which is preferably a C 4 or higher hydrocarbon having an upper boiling point of 150‹ C. The amount of-added hydrocarbon should be such as to ensure 5 to 10% by volume H 2 content in the final gas after complete hydrocracking. The calorific value of the final gas may be adjusted by adding to it a paraffin or a lowolefinic hydrocarbon, specifically butane and/or propane. Two specific examples are described in which the added hydrocarbon is respectively butane and heptane, the original gas is coke oven gas, and the final gas is enriched with butane.
